The CSIRO and the Tech Council of Australia collaborated on this report, aiming to create a geographic map of Australia’s digital hubs. The study revealed that while the tech industry is predictably concentrated in four major capital cities, there are also 60 metropolitan suburbs and 36 regional towns contributing to this digital landscape.
These specific clusters, the report notes, account for a significant 62% of all tech jobs generated in Australia. Additionally, an analysis of patent data indicates that companies within the capital city clusters are, on average, responsible for creating 63% more patent applications than their counterparts outside these clusters.
Titled “The geography of Australia’s digital industries,” the report is set to be unveiled today during the tech showcase at federal Parliament House. While the researchers express optimism about the thriving state of Australia’s tech landscape preventing a talent exodus, there are apprehensions that such innovation might come at a social cost.
According to the report, Sydney boasts 81 ASX-listed companies employing 119,636 workers, with a combined value of $52 billion on the ASX.
In contrast, Melbourne has 62 ASX-listed companies with 95,112 workers and a total value of $203 billion. Brisbane and Canberra also show substantial economic activity, supporting 33,534 and 19,362 workers, respectively.
Beyond major cities, regional areas such as Daylesford in Victoria and Newcastle in New South Wales are emerging as employment hotspots, particularly for professions like graphic designers.
The report emphasizes the need for sustainable development in these clusters. Hal Pawson, a housing expert at UNSW not involved in the report, highlights the potential housing market challenges associated with rapid industry growth. He cites examples, such as Silicon Valley, where an influx of well-paid workers disrupted the housing market.
However, this phenomenon is not exclusive to major cities, as clusters in areas like Gold Coast, Sunshine Coast, and Newcastle thrive due to lifestyle attractions for businesses. The report underscores the concentration of digital technology specializations in major cities but points out that graphic designers are an exception, being well-represented in regional areas.
In particular, the report identifies Burleigh Heads on the Gold Coast as a niche cluster for graphic designers, employing individuals in this profession at a rate 3.2 times higher than the national average, showcasing the diverse distribution of specialized industries.
