Distance learning or e-learning has undoubtedly contributed to the evolving learning and teaching methods. It has provided access to education or educational information globally. An individual no longer needs to remain confined to traditional lessons in a classroom to attain knowledge. 

Several limitations have given rise to e-learning methods and resources, breaking down geographical barriers to expand educational opportunities. Distance learning offers the flexibility of time and schedule enabling students to learn as per their timetable making education more convenient. Several individuals or students with prior family commitments or physical constraints can balance personal and educational responsibilities.

These platforms are more student-friendly, providing tailored learning techniques as per the need of every student. It, undoubtedly, has a personalized approach to enhancing a student’s overall performance. A CBSE school offers distance education to help students learn from anywhere globally. 

However, distance learning has several disadvantages and can impact students physically and mentally. There are various challenges faced by several students who have opted for distance learning as a solution to the constraints that keep them from attending a regular school. Below are some known facts proving that distance education can adversely affect an individual’s mind.

Increased stress and anxiety

Though distance learning offers a bundle of benefits making education more accessible, it can be as stressful as possible for various reasons. As we know, people opt for distance education due to responsibilities or other personal reasons. The primary reason for stress and anxiety is difficulty managing coursework and family duties. Also, there are several hours spent resolving technical issues. 

Isolation and distress

CBSE schools provided distance education to their students during the global crisis, but students were among the lot that suffered educational quarantine amidst medical quarantine. They have spent hours locked in their house and room under the pretext of e-learning. Education was undoubtedly imparted but at the cost of social isolation leading to distress. Students were separated from peers and co-students. 

No physical contact

In a regular school, children experience a positive atmosphere of learning where they meet fellow students, interact with their teachers, and so on. However, distance learning demotivated the actively engaged students due to the lack of physical contact, and lessons were longer engaging. Distance education made learning accessible but decreased productivity among students.

Fatigue and irritability

Distance learning increased the screen time for students who had no choice but to sit and learn. The excitement of school hours was soon replaced by a laptop or a computer causing mental and physical fatigue. A sudden change in the usual routine disrupted physical activity and confined students to the screens of several monitors across the globe. 

Reduced confidence

Though distance learning increased the flexibility of learning hours under every individual circumstance, it did affect the self-esteem of several students across the globe. Therefore, social learning plays an integral part in a student’s life. Collaborative learning, group discussions, and learning through games are all factors that significantly contribute to a student’s overall well-being. A student with class 10 admission and lowered self-esteem will definitely face educational challenges.



Distance education gained popularity in recent years and especially during the pandemic. It enabled students to connect and communicate without physical contraints. Right from kindergarten to children taking admissions in class 10, avail of the online facility without causing hindrance to the educational flow. However, distance learning also has an adverse effect on several students’ mental health.

Children who maintained a routine, healthy diet, and sound sleep were among the less affected. Children can adapt quickly; however, too many changes can mentally affect a child without any initial symptoms. Even though several challenges are faced while educating your child, children can still find reasons to enjoy and grow.
